Our first-generation Sleepbuds™ experienced a number of firsts, making the road to better sleep bumpy at times. We stepped out of our comfort zone and into new territory, accomplished something no one else had done before, and most importantly, assisted individuals who struggled to sleep every night. But we also discovered roadblocks along the way. This is something our users are all too familiar with. Which makes our present situation all the more appealing. The Sleepbuds™ II’s improved design and features, as well as their relaunch in September, are clearly catching on with reviewers, who note that the device is ideal for sleeping.

As we now present our next-gen Bose Sleepbuds™ II, we’re lifting the curtain to reveal a few more details and a unique look at how we’ve improved.

Long-lasting, lightweight and tiny—with enough power to last the whole night through. A lot to ask of a battery smaller than a pea. Our second-generation Sleepbuds™ was redesigned around a more dependable new battery, the same type used in hearing aids, resolving the charging issues that prompted the redesign. But we wanted to go further.

The intricate balance between functionality, form, and comfort was never more obvious than during our conversations with our mechanical engineers. When it comes to looking for the ideal tiny, sturdy battery, comfort and form are top of mind. They wanted all the power without sacrificing comfort. This meant that even the tiniest fraction of a millimetre variation could alter the equilibrium between comfort and performance.

To put it mildly, our designers and engineers paid close attention to the finer points. Customers will never know about or detect minor adjustments, such as how we reduced components to fit around the battery and yet remain comfortably in the ear. It is now redesigned with a more reliable battery that can last through the night with one charge, all of this while maintaining the form and circular curved design.

Improved connectivity and a “snaps” of security

When it came to connectivity problems, the team took a two-pronged approach: develop a faster, more stable connection from bud to the app, as well as make connecting buds to cases easier. Next-generation Bose Sleepbuds™ II users could sleep easy knowing that their headphones would stay connected while sleeping and charge when docked.

The addition of a third prong between the buds and the case, as well as an improved Bluetooth® LE radio, a refreshed Bose Sleep app, and the incorporation of a third prong between the buds and the case all improve establishing a connection. The third prong, not only controls how quickly Sleepbuds II “wake up” to connect but also helps to regulate battery charging for optimal performance. This means that the buds are now more securely docked and charged via a smart, intuitive user interface. When you insert our next-generation Sleepbuds™ II into the case, press the “satisfying snap.” We’re not sure where the idea came from, but users seemed to like “snap to the case,” which relies on magnets to draw buds together. To guarantee that Sleepbuds are always on hand for users, add warm LEDs to indicate charging and status changes, as well as new information for an all-around pleasant experience.

We appreciated the inventiveness of everything from masking tape to glued-on cloth to sandpaper. When it came to providing comfortable sleep earbuds for our next-generation Bose Sleepbuds™ II, we kept the squeak in mind. We tried a variety of materials and surfaces until we discovered a matte coating that eliminated the squeaks for everyone.

More masking. More sounds. More sleep.

Customers were at the core of the improvements in the next-generation Bose SleepbudsTM II, and they’re at the heart of our range of noise masking sounds, growing our library of content, and reconsidering our Bose Sleep app experience.

Our Acoustics and Digital Signal Processing engineers (Shaun Ente, Richard Herr, and Katie Moenkhaus) worked hard to optimize our masking sounds for a new, more powerful driver. Customers can sleep better through the night thanks to less distracting nighttime noises like snoring, which is why the redesigned earbud and five new masking sounds resulted in fewer interruptions.

We trusted in keeping open communication with clients since our development team recognized the importance of content and the app being so personal. It demonstrates this fact. The new Bose Sleep app’s improved interface is more user-friendly, with different sections of information in response to customer feedback who used the original Sleepbuds™ to assist relax and calm a racing mind.

Natural sounds and serenity-inducing music can be found in both Naturescapes and Tranquilities, which are designed to help you unwind and fall asleep fast. Meanwhile, to provide more variety and to drown out a wider range of nighttime noises, background noise-masking sounds were added. In the long term, we intend to extend Sleepbud™’s functionality through additional sound and content categories. Adapting and growing with our Sleepbud™ users.

From the hue and case to the circular form and smooth textures to the whole thing. The delicate balance between performance, usefulness and design that characterizes Bose Sleepbuds™ II was a technical and industrial design breakthrough. The end result is a product that meets the needs of customers while still maintaining the vision of creating a warm, friendly, and welcome experience from start to end.

This design is both practical and attractive.

Everything has a place and a function, as demonstrated by the case’s warmer hue. With low light in mind, the colour was chosen to be somewhat brighter. However, the new hue also lent itself to the overall ambience and warmth. Both LEDs and dimmers should be used to create a warm ambience that seamlessly blends into the softer tones of a sleep environment. Both offer an excellent resting experience.

Subtle hints, major impact

The circular forms that are intentionally woven throughout the design, from the case to the docking to the redesigned bean-like earbuds, all retain a rounded shape. When looked at as a whole, the design exudes a softer aesthetic with no sharp corners or edges. And when taken as a whole, the design shows warmth and comfort in each one of its aspects, as planned by our industrial designers.

All in the details

However, the most important thing is that the results are revealed in private settings. Every new user test was completed at every turn to confirm that bugs were not simply fixed, but enhanced even more. We paid attention to our users and took their feedback into account, which is evident in each well-thought-out modification. We set out to return our clients with next-generation Sleepbuds™, while also looking forward to what may be.
